In a Bohemian castle converted into a hotel, an atmosphere of silence reigns. The guests are there to rest and apart from a few murmured words, all noise is forbidden. When one resident becomes infatuated with a young woman, he tries to persuade her that they had an affair the year before in Marienbad.

Director: Alain Resnais
Classification: PG (brief nudity)
Running time: 1h 34m
Distributor: Studiocanal

Last Year at Marienbad has been digitally restored in 4K resolution from the original negative which was printed in 1960 and has been kept in good condition.
The calibration process, which played a key role in this particular restoration project, was undertaken by Jérôme Bigueur based on a scan of the negative using Resolve digital mastering software. It was used to restore the original contrast and the beauty of the film’s black-and-white images as faithfully as possible. The work he has done brings out the finesse and elegance of the photography, as well as the lighting designed by Sacha Vierny and Alain Resnais when they were shooting in DyaliScope. The splicing and visual effects were compared with an original viewing print.
At the same time, the colour palette was cleaned up: specks of dust were moved, together with a number of physical scratches and defects resulting from the film’s natural wear. The soundtrack was also restored based on the original 35mm mix.
This restoration work undertaken by STUDIOCANAL and the HIVENTY laboratory was partly funded by THE NATIONAL CENTRE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY AND THE MOVING IMAGE and CHANEL.

Paris 1913. Coco Chanel is infatuated with the rich and handsome Boy Capel, but she is also compelled by her work. Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is about to be performed. The revolutionary dissonances of Igor’s work parallel Coco’s radical ideas. She wants to democratize women’s fashion; he wants to redefine musical taste. Coco attends the scandalous first performance of The Rite in a chic white dress. The music and ballet are criticized as too modern, too foreign. Coco is moved but Igor is inconsolable. Paris 1920, Coco is newly wealthy and successful but grief-stricken after Boy’s death in a car crash. Igor, following the Russian Revolution is now a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris. Coco is introduced to Igor by Diaghilev, impresario of the Ballets Russes. The attraction between them is instant and electric. Coco invites Igor along with his wife – now sick with consumption – together with his four children and a menagerie of birds to stay at her new villa, Bel Respiro, in Garches.
