EXHIBITION TIMES: 12–19 MAR, 11AM–4PM DAILY
The exhibition combines laser cut, digitally printed textiles with hand pleating to explore how this beautiful yet fading skillset could interface with contemporary textile practices – exploring a parallactic shift in thinking about them.
The project works with Specialty Pleaters, the last hand pleating business in Melbourne and one of only 12 left in the world to create a series of digitally printed, pleated panels. These textiles work as augmented reality markers to pop an overlay of contemplative content in the form of small, abstract 3D animations inspired by the shifting perspectives of parallax and the crimping forms of pleats. The project wonders how traditional and contemporary textile design techniques can intersect to create contemplative, dimensional surfaces.
This project is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants Program.
