Originally commissioned for RISING Festival and now on display for the first time in Melbourne Now, Reverse Anthem, 2021, sees Advance Australia Fair musically and phonetically re-arranged, back-to-front and upside-down, in a rework of the original intended to spark debate around notions of Australian identity, holding up a mirror to the anthem’s hypocrisies and inconsistencies.

Reverse Anthem is a work by the late artist and educator Kate Daw and artist Stewart Russell, in collaboration with conductor and performer Jonathon Welch AM; artist, dancer and choreographer Amrita Hepi; and director and artist Antuong Nguyen.

Marking the closing weekend of Melbourne Now, visitors are invited to hear Reverse Anthem performed live, with a series of pop-up performances between 10.15am and 1pm taking you on a journey through the galleries.
