Take some time out with art! Ways of Looking teacher professional learning programs are offered each term. Engage in rich conversations about art with colleagues and discuss different strategies and approaches to use in the classroom to encourage diverse viewpoints and foster students’ observation, interpretation and responding skills.

This term, apply Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) to the discussion and analysis of artwork in the NGV Collection. Join NGV Educator, and trained VTS facilitator Leah Santilli, in a practical exploration of how VTS can support student engagement and enliven dialogue in the classroom. Developed by cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and art educator Philip Yenawine, VTS is an interactive teaching method that uses visual imagery, including art, to develop critical thinking, observation, and communication skills. Whether a complete VTS beginner or an experienced facilitator of VTS discussions, this program will provide opportunities for all to learn more about the guiding principles of VTS, practice leading VTS discussions and receive group coaching to help elevate the VTS facilitation experience.

This program is suitable for teachers of all levels and subject areas and does not require any specialist art knowledge or experience teaching visual art subjects. Places are limited to ensure all attendees can facilitate at least one VTS discussion during the session.

This event includes light refreshments. Please include any dietary requirements when booking.

Learning Outcome:s

  • Learn about the fundamental principles of the VTS method.
  • Discuss the application of VTS in various teaching and learning contexts.
  • Develop confidence in facilitating VTS discussions in classrooms and other learning environments.
  • Discuss considerations for the selection of images for VTS discussions.

AITSL Standards

  • 2.1 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.
  • 3.3 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking
  • 6.2 Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice, targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities.
