The Ways of Making teacher professional learning series offers educators an opportunity to explore the creative processes and ideas of artists and designers in the NGV Collection, while learning practical skills to incorporate into the classroom.

In May, join NGV educators for a day focused on the ideas and techniques of the French Impressionists. Observe, analyse and discuss a range of Impressionist paintings in the NGV Collection, then participate in a hands-on acrylic painting workshop in the studio, exploring ideas and techniques inspired by the Impressionists that can be applied in the classroom.

This program presents an opportunity for teachers to gain ideas for classroom activities inspired by French Impressionism ahead of the 2025 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces © exhibition, French Impressionism from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (6 Jun – 5 Oct 2025). It is suitable for teachers of all year levels, particularly those looking to integrate painting as a creative medium.

All materials are supplied. Morning Tea and lunch are included, please indicate dietary requirements when booking.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain practical skills with painting techniques, inspired by Impressionist works, that can be applied in classroom settings.
  • Develop strategies for integrating the study and analysis of Impressionist paintings into lesson planning for the gallery and classroom.
  • Identify ways to engage students in experimenting with painting techniques.

AITSL Standards:

  • 2.1 Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities.
  • 3.3 Select and use relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking.
