The Ways of Making teacher professional learning series offers educators an opportunity to explore the creative processes and ideas of artists and designers in the NGV Collection, while learning practical skills to incorporate into the classroom.
In August, join NGV educators and artist Rel Pham for a hands-on, technology-driven exploration of digital artmaking. Learn how digital tools and ICT can transform the creative process and inspire new approaches to art education in the classroom. The session begins with a guided tour of the NGV Collection, highlighting works that blend traditional techniques with digital innovation.
Rel Pham will share insights into his creative process before leading a practical workshop focused on using digital tools for collaging, idea-building for folios, and exercises to explore artistic concepts. Participants will experiment with various artmaking exercises using iPads and Apple Pencils.
This program is designed to provide teachers with the opportunity to experiment and build confidence with a range of digital tools and strategies to inspire classroom creativity. This session is suitable for teachers and educators of art across all year levels, particularly those interested in integrating digital tools into their curriculum.
All materials, including iPads and Apple Pencils, are supplied. Morning tea is included—please indicate dietary requirements when booking.

About the Artist
Rel Pham is a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist known for a strong use of electric, vibrant colours and a penchant for surrealism. Drawing upon old world fables and rituals for thematic inspiration, Pham explores the interconnected nature of our current physical and digital realities through screen-based video, animation and installation. Pham creates hybrid worlds, rendering traditional scenes of Cao Dai temples and Western classical art in an illuminated palette of neon PC coolant fluid and radiant LED lights. He flattens our past, present and future to demystify the invisible worlds that surround everyday life, exposing the programmed spectres haunting our data through cautionary tales of being intrinsically connected online.
Rel has exhibited works and various commissions including: TEMPLE, NGV Australia (2023), HYPERTHREAD, National Communication Museum (2024), CACHE, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (2023) TORRENT, The Bridge, Kingston (2022); Electric Dirge, 4A Digital, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (2021); as well as collaborating with artist Rainbow Chan for her show The Bridal Lament.
