Untitled (Hand-shell)

Is it possible to make art the same way you dream; conjuring one unexpected image after another, guided by intuition? Like many Surrealist artists of her time, Dora Maar thought so. The Surrealists had a name for this way of working: ‘pure psychic automatism’. Connect this Wednesday to find out how Dora Maar’s photomontage Untitled (Hand shell) is an example of this technique and why photography and film were so attractive to and often utilised by Surrealist artists.

Duration: 15 mins

Cost: Free

Learning objectives

  • Identify and describe the use of automatism in Untitled (Hand Shell)
  • Analyse and interpret the ideas and messages communicated in the artwork
  • Consider how the artwork expresses and responds to emerging technologies in the early 20th century
