Q&A with Vance Joy

If your music was an artwork what would it look like?

I would think it would have some bold thick strokes, like the paint coming off the canvas in little peaks like freshly beaten egg whites.

Who’s your favourite artist/artwork?

Ben Quilty

What’s your favourite gig you have played to date?

There are a few. My recent shows at the Northcote Social Club were memorable.

What song do you wish you wrote?

To her door, Paul Kelly. Jealous Guy, John Lennon.

What part of making music excites you the most?

The buzz of writing something that is better than you can do. Making a wrong turn (playing a note by mistake) and then embracing it and seeing where that takes you. Collaboration.

Tell us about the last song you wrote?

I based it on something Frank Sinatra said about Judy Garland; ‘Every time she performed she died a little’.

Vance Joy will  be performing at Friday Nights at Monet’s Garden on 5 July. Book tickets here.
