Director’s Message

The National Gallery of Victoria that we share and enjoy today has grown from the generosity of our community. The NGV Collection consists of more than 75,000 works from around the world, enabling us to reflect on our past and present, and also consider the possibilities of our future. To maintain the legacy of the NGV’s Collection and ensure its relevance into the future, we rely on our community to provide the vital funding to acquire art.

Alfred Felton’s generous bequest in 1904 remains the most remarkable gift to the NGV and has enabled the NGV to be a world-leading collecting institution. You can follow in the footsteps of Alfred Felton through making a bequest of your own of any amount, so that you can personally be a part of the NGV’s future growth for generations to come. As the custodians of this important Collection, we have a responsibility to maintain its legacy. The NGV Collection belongs to all Victorians. Our aim is to provide lasting connections not only with our local community, but also with those who live beyond Melbourne. Your bequest can also provide assistance with engaging our communities in many different ways.

In addition to Collection growth, you can play a key role in our mission by supporting important NGV Learning and NGV Kids programs. Children are a core audience for the NGV – we consider their access to the NGV’s Collection and programs is as important for our growth as it is for the development of each child visiting the NGV. A bequest acknowledges the important role the NGV has played in your life. Your gift will in turn, continue to enrich the lives of future generations. I warmly invite you to consider making a donation through your own bequest to the NGV to ensure we can continue to develop the NGV Collection and programs to enrich our communities.
