Noŋgirrŋa Marawili’s Djapu Appeal

The NGV is delighted to have acquired a significant body of work by one of Australia’s most esteemed artists, Noŋgirrŋa Marawili. Thanks to the generosity of our philanthropic community, Djapu 2020 is now part of the NGV Collection. This unique installation comprises nine larrakitj (memorial poles) that depict Djapu iconography in a brilliant fuchsia ink. Djapu is the first example to present this combination and makes an influential impact on the Gallery’s Indigenous Art Collection.

About Noŋgirrŋa Marawili

Noŋgirrŋa Marawili is a senior Madarrpa artist, highly acclaimed for her bark paintings, larrakitj (ceremonial hollow logs) and prints. Noŋgirrŋa works from the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre at Yirrkala in the Northern Territory and is regarded as one of the most important artists working from this area.

As the daughter of Madarrpa leader Mundukul and Galpu woman Bulunguwuy, Noŋgirrŋa is also the widow of Djapu clan leader and artist Djutadjuta Munuŋgur. It was Djutadjuta who taught her to paint in 1994, until his passing in 1999.

In 2011 Noŋgirrŋa produced an important body of work that broke new ground. This work drew on Djapu iconography of her late husband and her own Madarrpa iconography. In these larrakitj of differing heights, girths and irregular dimensions, Noŋgirrŋa represents Wandawuy, the Djapu homeland centre of her late husband. Wandawuy is the spiritual residence for the ancestral beings, Mäna the Shark and Bolŋu the Thunderman. Noŋgirrŋa has previously made paintings of these beings, both of which are represented in the NGV Collection.

The NGV Collection holds a number of works by Noŋgirrŋa dating back to 1994.
