Folio: Emma Tripp – Art Creative Practice

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Document, reflect and evaluate the development of personal responses using the Creative Practice and the Interpretive Lenses.

Emma’s work was produced as a School-based assessment for Unit 3 and 4 VCE Art Study Design. However, there are aspects that can be viewed as an example of how students could address the key knowledge and skills of Unit 3 Outcome 2 and Unit 4 Outcomes 1 & 2 of Art Creative Practice.

Emma has used critical and creative thinking to explore ideas that are important to them and that will become the focus of their body of work throughout Unit 3 Outcome 2 and Unit 4 Outcomes 1 & 2.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Emma uses thumbnail sketches to visually represent ideas related to the transgender experience. The critical annotations communicate their thinking and clarifies their visual language.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

As ideas begin to form Emma determined that further research was required into their selected subject matter related to ancient Greece and Rome. This allowed them to apply the required Analytical Frameworks in the Art Study design. This is an example of how the Cultural Lens could be used to develop subject matter and ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Emma explains using annotations the decisions they have made by documenting the relationship between their own images and the artworks they have used for inspiration.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Emma documents, critically reflects and progressively evaluates their body of work. In this example Emma evaluates the relationship between materials, techniques and visual language to communicate ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Specific features of the artworks have been evaluated using the frameworks.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 6 –

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Apply and manipulate materials, techniques and processes to develop personal responses and a visual language using the Creative Practice.

Having established the ideas they will explore, the Emma begins to explore and manipulate materials, techniques and processes. As their critical annotation clearly communicates, Emma constantly considers alternative approaches to their selected ideas. They develop their visual language using annotated sketches of their ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Emma continues to develop and refine their visual language to communicate ideas by using imagery informed by the research.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

The exploration and manipulation of a range of materials, techniques and processes to make a range of artworks is documented and evaluated throughout the body of work, as Emma continues to develop and refine their visual language to communicate ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Different options are explored in a range of artworks throughout the body of work using different materials, techniques and processes. In this example etching processes have been explored to find the best way of achieving Emma’s overall intention for their body of work.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Emma has explored a range of techniques and materials to communicate their ideas.

Unit 3 – Outcome 2 – Criterion 5 –

Emma explored different materials, techniques and processes to find the best way of achieving their intention and to communicate their ideas.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 7 –

Present a critique of the use of the Creative Practice from Unit 3 and use feedback and reflection to resolve a body of work.

In VCE Art Creative Practice Unit 4 Area of Study 1 students are required to present a critique of the work produced for Unit 3 Outcome 2. The critique in Area of Study 1 must take place before the resolution and presentation of the body of work. While a critique was not required in the previous study design this stage of the Emma’s exploration shows how feedback at the start of Unit 4 can inform how Emma could refine, resolve and present their body of work. Emma has reflected on their exploration and begins the refinement and resolution of personal their visual responses.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 7 –

Present a critique of the use of the Creative Practice from Unit 3 and use feedback and reflection to resolve a body of work.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Document, annotate and evaluate the refinement and resolution of the Body of Work.

Emma critically evaluates the refinement and resolution of their body of work, making decisions to refine and resolve personal visual responses that they feel have successfully communicated their ideas.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Emma has refined their personal visual responses and visual language in response to feedback by exploring digital tools and techniques.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Emma refined and resolved the use of materials, techniques and processes in their selected artform.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Emma developed and refined their Visual language to communicate ideas. They documented, critically reflected on and progressively evaluated symbols that would communicate their intended ideas.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

After completing one artwork Emma continues to refine and resolve their body of work, making decisions to refine and resolve personal visual responses for a second artwork.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Emma documents the process of stencilling as they refine and resolve personal visual responses. They have applied the techniques to additional images that they created at the start of Unit 4.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

The refinement and resolution of Emma’s personal visual responses is documented, and they makes use of appropriate Analytical frameworks applicable to the VCE Art study design. Emma has trialled markers and digital tools to the imagery and has evaluated how they have communicated their ideas. The Personal Interpretive Lens can be effectively applied in the evaluation. Emma also provides critically evaluation of the refinement and resolution of an ongoing body of work by discussing how they will explore these techniques further. They discuss how the images are related to the overall exploration of gender that connects the artworks in the body of work.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 8 –

Emma continues to refine and resolve their body of work, making decisions to refine and resolve personal visual responses with a third image.
