Kate begins exploring and evaluating artworks, influences and sources of inspiration by creating a mind-map in her Visual Arts journal, focusing on a specific art form.

Kate initially explores Rembrandt’s compositional structure and his use of chiaroscuro to develop her ideas based on emotions. She then takes photographs inspired by Rembrandt’s use of light and dark to develop her ideas, subject matter and visual language.

Kate explores Rembrandt’s compositional structure and his use of chiaroscuro to develop her ideas based on. She then presents some sketches inspired by Rembrandt’s use of light and dark to develop her ideas, subject matter and visual language.

Kate responds both visually and in written form to Sargent’s use of chiaroscuro and composition to develop her ideas. Kate conducts a photoshoot in response to Sargent’s work to develop her ideas, subject matter and visual language.

Kate explores her third artist, Jean Honore Fragonard’s work in terms of subject matter, art elements, art principles, aesthetic qualities, materials, techniques and processes, visual language and personal experiences.

Kate then responds both visually and in written form to selected artworks to develop ideas, subject matter, visual language and techniques.

Kate responds both visually and in written form, how Fragonard will inspire her art making. She explores ideas based on telling a story through portraiture and everyday life, similar to Fragonard. Kate also identifies materials and techniques inspired by Fragonard for future exploration.

Kate begins to explore her first artistic influence by completing a study (master copy) of Rembrandt’s Self-portrait. Here, Kate focuses on developing her understanding of Rembrandt’s brushwork,  imprimatora, underpainting and glazing techniques

Kate explores artist Edward Hopper as another artistic influence in addition to her other artistic influences.

Kate articulates aspects of Hopper and Rembrandt’s art making that inspire her individual art making. She develops her ideas and subject matter through sketching and conducting photoshoots focusing on Hopper’s ideas and subject and Rembrandt’s painting techniques and use of dramatic light and dark.

Kate presents her critique in the form of a PowerPoint and then pastes this in her Visual Arts journal after the critique.

Kate presents and documents 10 pages from the Visual Arts journal that represents Unit 3 Outcome 1 and 2 to the class. She has presented and discussed two artworks she made in Unit 3 Outcome 2.

Kate presents her critique in the form of a PowerPoint and then pastes this in her Visual Arts journal after the critique. She has screenshots of details from her visual diary to support her discussion.

Present a critique of art making and reflect on feedback

Kate collects feedback from the critique and pastes this in her Visual Arts journal. present a reflection on the feedback to further develop artworks in Unit 4. She has categorised the feedback to focus on each artwork and what she can improve. From the feedback she will write her reflection.

Kate collects feedback from the critique and pastes this in her Visual Arts journal. present a reflection on the feedback to further develop artworks in Unit 4. Her reflection focuses on each artwork and the materials and techniques she has used to communicate her subject matter and ideas. She also discusses the style of her artwork.

Before commencing her finished artwork(s), Kate synthesises ideas from Unit 3 in a brainstorm and extends them to refine and resolve subject matter

Kate documents the consolidation of ideas and the connections from previous works made in Unit 3. She focuses on the ideas, materials and techniques and the subject matter that will be resolved and refined in her finished artworks.

Therefore, the finished artworks demonstrate the extension and resolution of subject matter and ideas from Unit 3 and the resolution of visual language in a specific art form.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 6 –

Extend and resolve ideas explored in Unit 3 in at least one finished artwork in a specific art form

Kate extends her ideas from Unit 3, focusing on the refinement and resolution of subject matter, ideas and visual language in at least one finished artwork in a specific art form.

She took a series of photographs and then documented the visual language in each that communicates her subject matter and ideas. She has done a series of small sketches from each photo she is considering for her final artwork.

Unit 4 – Outcome 1 – Criterion 6 –

Extend and resolve ideas explored in Unit 3 in at least one finished artwork in a specific art form

Kate resolves her subject matter, ideas and visual language by extending and refining her use of art elements and principles to communicate ideas and meaning in the finished artworks in a specific art form.

Kate took another series of photos that referenced the lighting and costumes that were in Rembrandt’s work. She has then completed drawings in graphite pencil focusing on tonal qualities and lighting in the portraits.

Kate documents the use of materials, techniques and processes used to refine her finished artwork. On this page, she has explained how she prepared the canvas and also documented some of the conservation processes for the artwork using photographs and annotations.

She has also related the use of art elements and principles to the subject matter, techniques and ideas she was trying to convey in her artworks, thus acknowledging her use of visual language.

Her research focuses on an artist proposal, the characteristics of the gallery and the exhibition space, preventative conservation and didactic information. All these points assist her in developing her own presentation of the artworks.
