The Impressionists emerged from a time of enormous social upheaval including what architectural historian Antony Sutcliffe referred to as the ‘biggest urban renewal project the world has ever seen’. Although few Impressionist works provide evidence of the scale of Parisian building projects under Napoleon III, we can see signs of change within painted portraits and other scenes of urban life.
NGV Senior Curator Dr Miranda Wallace explores the metropolitan backdrop that supported many of the Impressionists’ studios, focusing on the work of Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas – artists who never described themselves as Impressionists but who are central to the movement.
