The maker is identified by an ink stencil, located centre-bottom reverse: J & W VOKINS MAKERS 14 GREAT PORTLAND ST. It is one of a number of frames by Vokins in the collection. Some of these were ordered by the NGV at, or soon after, the acquisition of the paintings. Unfortunately, the artist and title are not always recorded in the accounts and there are likely to be more frames by the company in the collection than we have been able to account for.

Materials
The frame is built up from a wooden chassis with applied composition ornamental sections. Both the wooden structure and the decoration are joined as mitres across the corners, including the ogee frieze section. The torus of imbricated laurel and berry is banded on the corners. The basic structure amounts to two sections with the addition of a slip. The working edge is formed by the addition of a wooden batten to the reverse. Spacer blocks re-enforce the centres and corners on the reverse, between the two primary sections of the profile.
Frame Condition
The basic structure and decorative scheme is intact. The surface has been completely reworked and the intended appearance of the original is lost.
