Frame
Recycled, 2010, late-19th century French frame

Frame

The reframing of The melon (c.1860’s or 1880) followed on from the work on The House at Rueil.
The former framing was Louis XV revival, the default framing of many French paintings of the second half of the C19th as they changed hands.
The proposal to reframe this painting and The ship’s deck arose in April 2008. The reframing is based on images of Manets paintings in their frames published in MANET RACONTÉ PAR LUI-MÊME, 1926, the posthumous Manet retrospective of 1884.

Original nineteenth century French frames that would suit both this picture and The Ship’s deck, were on offer from London.
For The melon the proposal was for an original nineteenth century cassetta style frame.
The frame arrived in March 2010 and was fitted to the painting.

The painting was cleaned and restored in 1997.
