Melbourne and 1960s fashion are the starring subjects of eighty striking never-seen-before photographs by fashion photographer Henry Talbot which feature in this exhibition from the NGV Collection.

In common with a number of other eminent practitioners in the postwar period, Henry Talbot was a European émigré artist who brought an invigorating internationalism to Australian photography. Talbot's career in Melbourne began in the late 1950s when he went into business with the renowned international fashion photographer Helmut Newton. Their Flinders Lane studio was a successful enterprise and they secured major clients including Sportscraft, Lucas and the Australian Wool Board. His time with Newton established Talbot's place as a dynamic force in Australian fashion photography, and his work was regularly published in Australian Vogue.

Throughout the 1960s, and into the 1970s, Talbot was a leading figure in the Australian fashion world. His work was known for its fresh modern look linking contemporary fashion and popular culture, and exemplified the emerging youth culture of these exuberant times. The exhibition is open during the NGV's landmark 200 Years of Australian Fashion exhibition and together these two exhibitions will offer a fresh new look at Australian fashion in the 1960s.
