Frame

Frame

This frame is large in scale for a miniature but it reflects a taste for presenting larger format miniatures in the manner of oil paintings. The frame is simple in form and derives from classical models. It is only one of two frames by this maker that can be identified in the collection, though the register of accounts suggests there should be many more. Given the date of acquisition, it is likely the frame was put on the miniature by the previous owner, rather than by the NGV.

Materials

The frame is constructed from a solid wooden profile, mitred and nailed at the corners. It carries two runs of composition ornament, one on the back edge and another toward the sight edge. The water gilding is matte across the surface. The window mount is of gilded card with the bevel edge burnished.

Frame Condition

The frame is in good original condition. It retains the original forged pins to hold the miniature in place and the original plywood backing.
