To do this activity you will need to:

• Read the information for Theme Five – The 1960s and 1970s: Pop Art.
• View the work either online or in the exhibition.
• Research through the library or Internet.

Individual Task

Comment on the way Lichtenstein created fine art informed by what had usually been considered commercial ‘low’ or mass culture.

Research Questions

Research the mural work of Fernand Leger from the 1920s. Notice how Roy Lichtenstein has been inspired by his work. What aesthetic qualities do their works share?

Group Task

Research the Vietnam War protest movement. What impact (if any) did the Vietnam War have on Lichtenstein and his art?
