Following his first solo exhibition in 1983, Stieg Persson became well known for his refined and decoratively complex paintings that combine abstraction, realism, romanticism and the gothic. Persson’s current work critiques middle-class taste and affectation. Here, cloyingly sweet images of fluffy kittens on cartoonish clouds float behind lush gold renderings of graffiti, copied from the walls of Melbourne’s wealthy south-eastern suburbs and likely the work of ‘rebellious’ private school students.
