Maree Clarke is connected to traditional lands of the Mutti Mutti, Wamba Wamba, Yorta Yorta and Boonwurrung peoples.Clarke’s multidisciplinary practice reclaims and celebrates Aboriginal ritual, language and art lost during the colonisation of Victoria. Ritual and Ceremony presents photographic portraits of Victorian Aboriginal people bearing ritual markings of mourning. While the work is partly a symbol of collective grief, the accompanying video interviews with the subjects injects a sense of resilience and courage into the project.
