Helen Johnson’s paintings explore the political and cultural narratives that inform cultural identity. Drawing on both personal and official narratives, and using an aesthetic that slips between figuration and abstraction, her work challenges any assumptions that painting accurately or neutrally represents its subject. Her work The prophetic nymphs re-examines colonial settlement, proposing that a perpetual state of denial lies at the heart of the colonising power.
