Janet Beckhouse’s contemporary ceramics draw inspiration from Baroque and Rococo aesthetics, early modernist Australian ceramic traditions, and the artist’s wild imaginings. In her beautifully detailed works, natural motifs – such as elaborate corals and intricate foliage – jostle against more folkloric elements – such as mermaids, skulls and crossbones – to create an uninhibited and exhilaratingly discordant riot of ornamentation.
