For almost forty years, Stephen Benwell has worked in printmaking, drawing and painting, however he is best known for his distinctive hand-built and freely decorated ceramic forms and figures. Referencing eighteenth-century figurines and Greco-Roman statuary, Benwell’s grouping of evocative male figures explores artistic traditions of the male nude and encourages consideration of notions of masculinity and sensuality.
