About this work

After moving to Australia in his late teens, Clive Murray‑White attended Brisbane Technical College and the Guildford School of Art in England. Returning to Australia in 1962, he established his reputation through his conceptual sculptures; minimalist abstractions composed of found objects and powder-coated steel. His marble portrait of businessman and philanthropist Alfred Felton reflects his radically different figurative approach of more recent years. Felton died in 1904, and under the terms of his will established a bequest providing funds to acquire works for the National Gallery of Victoria. Over the past 100 years, more than 15,000 works of art have been acquired through his generosity.
