This public art project extends Melbourne Now into the city at large through the flying of artist-designed flags on flagpoles across Melbourne, with a concurrent display in the NGV’s Great Hall. The artists explore the symbolic, semantic and decorative potential of flags, considering both their customary use – such as for rallies or parades – as well as alternative opportunities for flag-waving. Developed by Stewart Russell of Melbourne’s Spacecraft, the project invites us to express and debate questions of place and cultural identity, communication and belonging.
